Families shouldn’t be running on empty

Families like Evelyn’s are doing everything they can to keep up. But rising food and fuel costs are making everyday essentials harder to afford – and the situation is getting worse.

In March alone, 53% of Queenslanders reported it’s harder to put food on the table, a sharp increase from the month before. Families who were just managing are now being pushed to the brink, with many feeling the impact of rising grocery prices more than ever.

“By the end of pay fortnight, there isn’t much left. The fridge is bare.” – Evelyn, grandmother.

Right now, families are running on empty, but your support can fill their plate.

The reality of hunger in Queensland

For too many Queenslanders, hunger isn’t a distant issue – it’s a daily decision. Right now, families across our state are making impossible choices. These aren’t one-off moments. This is the reality of living through a cost-of-living crisis – where everyday essentials are no longer affordable at the same time.

In March 2026 alone, 17% more Queenslanders found it harder to put food on the table – highlighting the growing impact of cost-of-living pressures across the state.

Foodbank Queensland does not accept food donations from members of the public, schools or fundraising teams. To operate as efficiently as possible, we source and rescue food on a very large scale from registered food retailers, farmers and manufacturers only. Collecting food this way helps us provide the most food to our network of more than 350 Community Partners in the most cost-effective way. If you are an individual, school, or fundraising team looking to donate food, we recommend finding a local charity or shelter that may be able to accept your donation directly.
